We were overwhelmed by the generosity of our members at our Christmas Party. We had decided that rather than give gifts to members this year we would ask them to donate to a local charity, CARE UK, whose mission is to help those in need wherever they are. They are working very proactively to support those referred by local agencies, those who have temporary problems because of the impact of COVid and are being helped by weekly donations from the foodbank in Appleton Thorn, refugees from Afghanistan who are currently being housed in local hotel rooms and refugee families who they have helped resettle in the area.
At our Christmas party we collected a very full carload of Christmas food gifts, toiletries and toys for CARE UK, which Jean delivered to their Northwich depot. About 10 of our members volunteered to help this charity, either before or after Christmas, but Covid restrictions limited the number who could help with the pre-Christmas session as the room was fairly small. Jean, Mary and Yvonne were able to work alongside a very organised team leader from CAREUK, and packed about 16 carrier bags full of goodies, to be taken to local families, and refugees who are trying to resettle in the area. We were very impressed with the care taken to ensure that families were treated equally, and their bags included appropriate items for each specific family group. This really is a charity that works very locally, very specifically, and with an absolute commitment to ensure that those in need are treated with dignity. Mary and Yvonne returned the following week to help with more packing. It must be great for families in very difficult circumstances to experience a warm welcome and toys/food to celebrate their first Christmas in the UK.
We hope to arrange small groups to go to help sort donations in the New Year, when the current Covid surge settles down.
