Members can join at Whitley Village Hall at 10 am, or at the walk start point &#8211; please look on the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.whitleywi.org.uk\/index.php\/events\/category\/monthly-walk\/\">calendar<\/a><\/strong><\/span> to check details.<br>Ann O&#8217;Brien leads the group and always finds an interesting walk for us, usually around 4 miles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We walk at a leisurely pace and there is always the opportunity for lunch at the end of the walk. Members who aren&#8217;t able to join the walk are always welcome to come along just for lunch. Everyone contributed, bringing goodies including sandwiches, quiches, and a large sausage roll wreath made by Pat S who was Ann&#8217;s Christmas elf and a star rolled into one. Desserts included cakes, fruit kebabs and Annette&#8217;s individual trifles which were wonderful in their little glass cups. Melanie made her very nice punch. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f9e3683c99c0d3f0cde714fa5b611643\">After lunch we had a quiz of anagrams connected with walking and then lots of laughter and chatter whilst we played charades.  Ann thanks all the walkers who have joined her over the last years and looks forward to lots of enjoyable walks in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-vivid-green-cyan-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e9a33cfc28ee81732f4f33a8e7fad781\"><strong>Nov 2024<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 32%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>On a glorious sunny day 4 enthusiastic walkers set off from the car park and down the path to take us alongside the Budworth Mere. The reflection of the trees on the other side of the Mere could be seen in the still water. The swans came gliding towards us showing their cygnets off, then just around the corner we met a raft of ducks. We followed the track to the lane,crossed the road to the path into the woods eventually going down a set of steps carefully watching footing to avoid slipping on the wet foliage. We made our way back to the car park where we met Penny who came with us to the Spinner and Bergamot for a refreshing drink. Good walk, good food and good company enjoyed by all.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-vivid-green-cyan-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e050f6fa8fc37e4260863092aced11c4\"><strong>October  2024<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Six walkers had a leisurely stroll around Walton Gardens in rather drizzly conditions but by the time we had checked the rabbits, goats, peacocks etc the sun was shining. The gardens were looking very well groomed and the leaves were beginning to turn to their autumn colours on the trees.   We ventured through the garden that people could go to for some tranquility whilst they remembered their loved ones. We passed a small covered stage with wooden benches in the corner and then ventured past the pond where several of our artists had sat earlier on in the summer demonstrating their talent. Six members were expertly guided around the park by Ann. Afterwards we were joined by a further member for lunch at the Tarporley Garden Centre where some of us enjoyed a little shopping.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-vivid-green-cyan-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-7a58dcb67f2163402fba1149f32bb289\"><strong>July 2024<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8af181d2aebb6006067c4944e73e7a51\">&nbsp;A walk at Acton Bridge \u2013 along the canal and the River Weaver, with a lunch at the Riverside<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-vivid-green-cyan-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-2a1faa7af8bb50fc6c5b3d01a9d316f2\"><strong>May 2024<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our group had a lovely amble around Marbury<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-vivid-green-cyan-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-28203588fd4b8b9e576dd37820438aaa\"><strong>April 2024<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-97adc3ce3a4b5b8643e950ac0e547081\">Walk had to be cancelled because of bad weather<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-vivid-green-cyan-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-df7ac89ee3f3ea0b27a471d27c5ab893\">M<strong>arch 2024 &#8211; Appleton Paths<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a very wet February when our walk had to be cancelled, Ann decided to take the group on to much &#8216;better&#8217; surfaced paths around Appleton. Lunch at the Cat &amp; Lion was enjoyed at the end of the walk \u2013 with the weather much better than recently.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-vivid-green-cyan-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-64f37eb04fa9acee5945b5f4e8d74901\"><strong>January 2024 &#8211; Whitegate Way<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On a lovely bright but somewhat chilly Tuesday morning in January twelve lady walkers enjoyed a section of the Whitegate Way which was an originally an old railway line that has been transformed into a pleasant place to stroll or ride which stretches for six miles from the heart of Winsford to Cuddington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:41% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" src=\"http:\/\/www.whitleywi.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/walking-group-image.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8178 size-full\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.whitleywi.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/walking-group-image.jpg 320w, http:\/\/www.whitleywi.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/walking-group-image-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.whitleywi.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/walking-group-image-150x113.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>We started from the car park at Whitegate station and headed towards Winsford passing many people stepping out in the sunshine. The Way offers easy walking for all ages with varied routes off the main path. Shaded wooded cuttings contrast with open embankments offering spectacular views across the Cheshire countryside. class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>On a lovely autumn morning with weather more like a summers\u2019 day we set off to walk in the woodlands in Marbury Park alongside the Budworth Mere. Although we were walking on some fallen leaves in places most of the trees still had their full complement of leaves, some starting to change colour.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>We made our way to the Trent and Mersey Canal going over the bridge and turning left on our way to Neumann\u2019s Flash going along paths with Dairy House Meadows on the right. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 36%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>On reaching our destination we came across ducks, swans and their cygnets on the water. After going to the nearby hide we started our way back walking between an avenue of silver birches. Look closer and you will realise that the history and geography of the area has resulted in major areas of beauty which members of the public can access. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:28% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"http:\/\/www.whitleywi.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/0.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7252 size-full\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.whitleywi.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/0.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.whitleywi.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/0-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.whitleywi.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/0-150x113.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>For their July walk, members of Whitley WI headed to the parkland area of Runcorn Hill Park and Nature Reserve. Rising above the town, Runcorn Hill is a unique combination of Formal Park and Local Nature Reserve in the heart of industrial Runcorn.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 31%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Once extensively used for quarrying, the WI members noted the huge sandstone walls within the quarry, as well as taking a selfie picture besides a \u2018bogie\u2019 truck.  Walking through the woodlands and scrub lined paths, they eventually reached the top of the hill where its elevation gave spectacular views to the Welsh Mountains, the Mersey Estuary and North Cheshire. <\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"http:\/\/www.whitleywi.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_0789.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7253 size-full\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.whitleywi.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_0789.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.whitleywi.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_0789-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.whitleywi.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_0789-150x113.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly the park includes the largest area of lowland heath in North Cheshire. Our members enjoyed the unique mosaic of habitats. Broom bushes were in abundance, resplendent with \u2018pods\u2019 of seeds, some being black and some being white and hairy. At a few locations there were areas of sand \u2026. Runcorn Park Caf\u00e9 was a busy and most suitable venue, to share thoughts with happy chatter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><mark>Thank You to Ann for her reconnaissance and leadership.<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>June 2023 &#8211; Anderton Nature Reserve<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What a lovely day to go for a walk! This is what a lot of members of Whitley WIs walking group thought as they took the short journey to visit the Anderton Nature Park. They were not disappointed. The sun shone as they entered the park through several pillars decorated with dragonflies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:47% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"558\" height=\"326\" src=\"http:\/\/www.whitleywi.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_20230606_112401.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7243 size-full\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.whitleywi.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_20230606_112401.jpg 558w, http:\/\/www.whitleywi.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_20230606_112401-300x175.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.whitleywi.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_20230606_112401-150x88.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 558px) 100vw, 558px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>The path took them through a wooded area. past a bench with various sculptures and into an open wildflower meadow. This was in full bloom, buttercups were nearly waist high, and lots of stops along the way recognising various species, and wondering what the others were. One was definitely recognised as hemlock.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The main track then led them to Marbury Brook which they crossed via a footbridge surrounded by trees. Eventually they reached Witton Brook, which is a very reedy tributary of the river Weaver. Shallow steps then led all to a path alongside the river Weaver. Lots of old rusted pipelines a reminder of the former salt chemical industry of which Cheshire is famous for. After passing several fishing stages, it was time to picnic! Lunch was enjoyed in the fresh air with lots of chatter. Then back to the car park via The Anderton Boat lift\u2026an ice cream stop for many. In conclusion, great company, sunshine, a very pretty and varied walk woodland, meadows and riverbanks. What more could you ask for?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>May 2023 &#8211; A walk around Glazebrook<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 41%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Having parked towards the back end of Bents Garden Centre car park 9 walkers headed along a right of way path towards Windy Bank Woods. On reaching Jennets Lane we turned right and crossed a bridge over Glaze Brook where we reached a tarmac road.  Turning right we continued along between two fenced fields, cows on one side and sheep with their lambs on the other.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"http:\/\/www.whitleywi.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/may-walk-glazebrook.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7141 size-full\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.whitleywi.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/may-walk-glazebrook.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.whitleywi.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/may-walk-glazebrook-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.whitleywi.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/may-walk-glazebrook-150x113.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The walk was very varied meandering on the paths in the woodland, passing ponds and seeing lots of long grasses and many wild flowers in the meadows. The route was changed several times when areas got boggy, and alternative ways were found. So seeing a sign saying &#8220;Road Closed&#8221;, we paid no attention&#8230; however this road really was closed. They obviously knew her, and she explained that she goes there every day, with a shopping-trolley full of bird food\u2026spending far more on the birds than on herself.
