Whitley WI Baking (WI members only)<\/mark><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Our Baking Beauties Group usually meet on the last Friday of the month at 1:30 in Whitley Village Hall – please look on the calendar<\/a><\/mark><\/strong> to check details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jonty Jones and Chris Jones lead the group with a different baking idea each month. The group started on Zoom during the pandemic and has gone from strength to strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Members each make their own cake\/product to bring along to the meeting. We go round the room for each person to explain how they made their cake and where the recipe came from. Sometimes the most entertaining input is from members who confess what an absolute disaster they produced!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We then all have the opportunity to have a small sample of the different offerings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Members aren’t always able to make something, but are still very welcome to come along to sample other peoples cake and enjoy some social time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our next meeting is on Friday 30th May when members will be taking a break from their kitchens and enjoying an Afternoon Tea at Poppies Tearoom in Northwich<\/p>\n\n\n\n

January 2025 – Gypsy Creams<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ten members met to share their chosen recipes for Gypsy (Romany) creams. This was the first time we had all baked the same item and it promoted an interesting discussion. Recipes from a number of sources provided a variety of flavours and biscuit size. The different recipes included chocolate, orange and ginger flavourings, and chilling or freezing for an hour before baking, All very tasty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

November 2024 – Christmas Icing Models<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sixteen members gathered for our Christmas Baking Beauties meeting. Jonty had asked Gill and Lynda from Stretton WI to come along and teach us to create Christmas icing models. They brought along kits with the icing and tools needed for each of us to make our own model. We divided into a ‘Santa’ group and a ‘Snowman’ group and really enjoyed creating our own little character \u2013 each one took on its own little personality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There wasn’t quite time to make a second one, but we were able to take home our kit to make another different one. A really enjoyable session \u2013 thanks to Jonty for organising this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

October 2024 – Herbs and Spices<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

Twelve bakers came along with their delicious savoury and sweet treats containing a range of Herbs and Spices – Pork Plait, Breads, biscuits, scones, and cakes \u2013 a wonderful selection. <\/p>\n<\/div>

Some members entertained us with tales of some of the problems encountered in the process of baking \u2013 a Swedish apple tart ended up on the floor, and the pastry for an egg custard was decidedly sub-standard, but they persevered and all enjoyed sampling the range of tasty flavours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

September – Autumn Fruits<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

11 ladies met to share their baking with autumn fruits. As usual there was an interesting selection of baked. Apples stole the day with apples pies, tarts, cake and dried apples for snacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Melanie also prepared an apple picture quiz. Can you name any? Sue R got 7 out of 10<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

July 2024 – Baking Gluten Free<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Baking Beauties had a go at Baking Gluten free. Helen C visited to give us some tips on this. Many people today have a gluten allergy and GF flours are readily available. The recipes tried by our members worked out very well and all gave the recipes a thumbs up!<\/p>\n<\/div>

June – Something fruity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

May 2024 – Savoury Finger Food<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our bakers explored savoury finger food this month. Cheese featured heavily in
some of these savoury treats. From palmiers to pate, crostini to samosas they were all very tasty!<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

April 2024- Bara Brith<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

In April our members all made a \u2018Bara Brith\u2019, but using a variety of recipes and tins \u2013 it was interesting to see how different the final results were. It was a good practice for our entry for the Cheshire Show<\/p>\n<\/div>
